Precision fermentation designed to accommodate the needs of modern science

Our facility and technologies effortlessly scale the fermentation of wild-type and recombinant microorganisms, producing essential enzymes, proteins, and other biomolecules for various industrial applications. The precision fermentation product undergoes on-site downstream processing or is concentrated and delivered to customers according to their specifications.

EKF Life Sciences is a critical link in the evolution of improved and environmentally sensitive manufacturing processes such as precision fermentation. Our state-of-the-art facility, engineered to accommodate the dynamic needs of modern science, sets a benchmark for modernity and efficiency.

The fermentation facility includes:

  • 300L fermentor
    • Ideal for small multiple batch production, working volume of between 75-240L
  • 1,500L fermentor
    • Ideal for small multiple batch production, working volume of between 375-1,200L
  • 3,000L fermentor
    • Ideal for pilot plant and medium-scale production, working volume of between 750-2,400L
  • 14,500L fermentor
    • Custom-built system, working volume of between 2,500-10,000L

These fermentors are housed in dedicated HEPA-filtered suites, accompanied by media vessels and mixing tanks. In addition, we have mobile benchtop scale systems with working volumes of between 2-10L and mobile free-standing systems with working volumes of between 20-100L, suitable for small-scale production.

Our fermentation systems are automatically controlled and monitored for agitation, air, supplemental gas, pH, temperature, pressure, foam, Dissolved Oxygen, and off-gas oxygen and CO2. They are supported by off-line glucose and lactate monitoring systems. These, in combination, provide a more detailed profile of a specific organism’s metabolism and a means for precise control of a fermentation process.

The PLC controller design allows for automated cascading of aeration, agitation, and vessel pressure and controls the percentage of Dissolved Oxygen at a specified range. It also allows for custom configurations of a given client’s control scheme and production protocol.
